Riso Alphabet

My Riso Alphabet is a vibrant on-going typographic project exploring the playful tension between hand-drawn lettering and the bold, unpredictable qualities of Risograph printing. The series transforms each letter—imagined in a different style—into a layered composition of colour, texture, and movement. By embracing the imperfections and tactile charm of Risograph printing, the project celebrates print as a living, expressive medium in an increasingly digital world. It highlights how experimental typography can bridge craft, nostalgia, and contemporary graphic design. All letters are printed in Ljubljana at Riso Paradiso.

The Riso Alphabet began in 2023 with the letter M, as an exploration of how expressive, calligraphic brush strokes could translate into the mechanical yet beautifully imperfect language of Riso. Drawing from my background in hip-hop culture, sign painting, mural art, and handlettering, each letter is first created manually, focusing on rhythm, gesture, and personality before being separated into bold colour layers for print. The project embraces intentional misregistration, grain, and vibrant fluorescent inks—allowing the riso process itself to become a collaborator rather than just a tool. Each letter also represents a word or a concept the author believes in. For example the A is for analog. P is for Peace. S is for Super.
